AERPLAYE presents "RETURN" at RISD

Rhode Island’s newest and most exciting modern dance company, Aerplaye, presents it’s premiere performance, “Return”, at the Rhode Island School of Design Auditorium on Saturday, September 28th, and Sunday, September 29th.
Return features the work and dance of Aerplaye founder Heather Ahern. Well known to dance enthusiasts in Rhode Island and beyond, Ahern was also a founding member and co-Artistic Director of Groundwerx Dance Theatre of Providence, with whom she enjoyed a national reputation, touring and performing for fifteen years. Appearing in concert with Ahern are Aerplaye’s founding dancers: Jamie Arnold, Shura Baryshnikov, Sarah Hopkins, Kathy Gordon Smith, and Brittany Lombardi, with a cameo appearance by special guest Michael Bolger.
Ahern’s work is diverse, moving, and at times playful, dipping into performance art and referencing many genres of dance. “Return” features a total of six dances, including:
“There’s a Groove in My Jam”, featuring a rambunctious, humorous, high-energy, dance quartet, accompanied by a randy jazz saxophone composition.
“Voices” which finds the cast donning ornate full-length medieval dresses by designer Linda Milian, and performing to the music of a women’s a cappella group, “Zorginia”, (featuring talented Providence soprano, Ellen Santaniello), plumbs the depths of the internal lives of three women, at times seemingly trapped in their mundane roles, at other times empowered by their position in the world.
“Ascend” features the music of Beethoven, masterfully played by The Boston Trio. The dance is an angelic, balletic, fluid, perpetually moving piece, performed by a quintet clad in white silk, with costumes by designer Liz Carpenter.
“Utopia”, Aerplaye’s signature dance, utilizes free-standing, steel, hoop-skirt sculptures, adorned by the dancers.
Seating is general admission. Tickets for the event are $15 general, $10 for students, and can be purchased at the door or through Brown Paper Tickets at:

Providence Ballet Theatre’s production transforms the traditional fairy tale of Hansel & Gretel into a journey to discover the nature of true beauty. Left alone in a forbidding forest, two children learn that true beauty cannot be determined by what is seen by the naked eye, but can only come from within. This dramatic ballet features collaboration between choreographer and composer, with the talents of local professional dancers to create an all-new artistic experience for all ages.

Rhode Island, under Artistic Director Herci Marsden, present an around-the
world performance experience – Tour de Ballet.
The show marks the world premiere of the musical score, SAFARI, in Act 1
by emerging Rhode Island composer Christy Isles. Written for The State
Ballet of Rhode Island, the six-movement piece will be played by a live
ensemble, and features choreography by SBRI resident choreographer Mia
Godbout.
Plus, from The State Ballet’s repertoire, enjoy celebrated works from Marsden’s repertoire, an exciting Celtic ballet from Ireland, the Tarantella from Italy, the Can-Can from France, Don Quixote Pas de Deux from Spain, romantic Waltzes from Vienna, and East Slavic epic Polovtsian Dances from Borodin’s “Prince Igor,” a colorful setting with marvelous
moments of drama and characterization.

The world premiere in music and dance is a collaborative effort between emerging RI composer Christy Isles and SBRI resident choreographer Mia Nocera Godbout. The six-movement piece will be played by live ensemble. It will provide examples of different styles of dance throughout the world, as well as different styles of music.
